Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) is a colorless, virtually odorless and slightly viscous liquid. It is miscible with water, alcohols, aldehydes and many organic compounds. MEG will not dissolve rubber, cellulose acetate or heavy vegetable and petroleum oils. MEG has a low volatility and it is 50% more hygroscopic than glycerol at room temperature.Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is the most widely used chemical from the Glycol family. It is an essential raw material for Polyester fibres and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) polymer. MEG based products are also used as coolants in Automobile antifreeze, resins, humectants for / paper etc.MEG can be transported in Epoxy coated MS tankers. It can be stored in MS containers lined with baked phenolic resin / air drying epoxy phenolic resin or vinyl resin. It is advisable to store MEG in a cool, dry place with good ventilation - away from heat, sparks or flames.

Applications:

1. Polyester

Mono Ethylene Glycol is an essential raw material for Polyester. Ethylene Glycol reacts with PTA / to produce polyester.

2. Adhesives, Sealants and Coatings

Mono Ethylene Glycol and D-Ethylene Glycol is used in latex based paint formulation. These glycols are also used to produce acrylate and methacrylate resins for coatings, adhesives, and paints.

3. Alkyd Resins for Paints and Coatings

Mono Ethylene Glycol is used as a reactant in the manufacture of Alkyd resins which are used in Paints, enamels and varnishes.

4. Antifreeze

Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is used as an active ingredient in engine coolants and antifreeze, offering benefits including a high boiling point, low vapor pressure, excellent heat transfer abilities, and the ability to depress the freezing point of water.

Triethylene Glycol- Teg ( in tanks)

TEG is produced as a byproduct in the manufacture of MEG.
TEG is a colourless liquid with a high boiling point. It is most hygroscopic in nature, amongst Mono & Diethylene Glycols. TEG is miscible with water,  alcohol, ether, acetone but is insoluble in benzene and its homologues. TEG is a stable non corrosive chemical with a high flash point.
TEG finds end use in Natural Gas Dehydration, Plasticizers, Conditioning agents etc.
At normal temperature and pressure, TEG can be easily transported in Mild steel tankers, internally coated with an epoxy paint.
Similarly, TEG can be stored in MS containers lined with baked phenolic resin / air drying epoxy phenolic resin or vinyl resin. It is advisable to store TEG in a cool, dry place with good ventilation - away from heat, sparks or flames.
Care should be taken to prevent TEG from mixing with strong acids, bases and oxidising materials.

 Applications:

1. Natural Gas Dehydration: Hygroscopic nature of TEG is put to use in dehydration of natural gas. TEG is contacted counter currently with natural gas in a packed or bubble tray to remove moisture from natural gas. TEG is subsequently regenerated for reuse by stripping it of its water content. 2.

2. Plasticizer:TEG can be effectively used as a plastisizer for Vinyls, nitro cellulose, safety glasses. Diesters of TEG gives good low temperature properties and smooth film finishes.
3. Conditioning Agent
The affinity of TEG for water is used advantageously in the manufacture of adhesives or pastes to eliminate shrinkage, curling and brittleness.

Propylene glycol is clear, colorless, slightly syrupy liquid at room temperature. It may exist in air in the vapor form, although propylene glycol must be heated or briskly shaken to produce a vapor. Propylene glycol is practically odorless and tasteless.Propylene glycol is a synthetic liquid substance that absorbs water. Propylene glycol is also used to make polyester compounds, and as a base for deicing solutions. Propylene glycol is used by the chemical, food, and pharmaceutical industries as an antifreeze when leakage might lead to contact with food.It is used to absorb extra water and maintain moisture in certain medicines, cosmetics, or food products. It is a solvent for food colors and flavors, and in the paint and plastics industries. Propylene glycol is also used to create artificial smoke or fog used in fire-fighting training and in theatrical productions. Other names for propylene glycol are 1,2-dihydroxypropane, 1,2-propanediol, and trimethyl glycol.
