Blessed with excellent water affinity and solubility, these compounds lies in the class of chelating agents. They coordinately bond with various metal ions for their inactivation. These are profoundly used in cosmetic industries. They help to prevent the degradation of cosmetic compounds thereby inhibiting the growth of moulds and microorganisms.

They are also used to maintain clarity, preserve fragrance and overcome rancidity, thus enhances the performance in hard water.
